Shambhala Online Weekly Dharma Gathering

“Dissolving Cultural Norms of Shame as an Act of Resilience”

with Tuyet Cullen

Hosted by Adriana DiFazio

All are welcome to join these weekly events, which include guided meditation and a talk and discussion with a featured guest teacher.

On March 20, we welcomed Tuyet Cullen who presented a talk titled “Dissolving Cultural Norms of Shame as an Act of Resilience”.

This tradition began at Shambhala New York in the early 1990s as a way to welcome the greater community into the Shambhala center. Today, many Shambhala centers around the world continue to host these events for members and friends of the Shambhala community. We hope that these events will allow us to collectively examine the issues facing our sangha and larger society by spotlighting new and fresh voices across our mandala.

The Shambhala Online Weekly Dharma Gathering series is hosted and curated by Dr. Shanté Paradigm Smalls. Dr. Smalls is a teacher in the Shambhala lineage and student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. They are assistant professor of Black Culture and Literature, as well as as a performer and performance studies scholar. Dr. Smalls has published work on hip hop, film, queer performance, and a host of other scholarly topics. Connect with Shanté on social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram

About the Teacher

Tuyet Cullen has been in public education for 15 years in Madison, Wisconsin. Her path as a meditator and her path as a teacher are one in the same. Meditation has given her space to be present and compassionate with her students and co-workers and teaching has given her an understanding of the spaciousness of the human heart. Mining these experiences has given her the tools to constantly build, tear-down and build again a container in her classroom where students feel seen for who they are and a little bit more confident in taking risks. Her path continues to support constant reflection and adjusting of her craft as a teacher, especially in how she works with children who feel unrepresented in the public institution of education. She is a member of the Core Mindfulness Team for the Madison Metropolitan School District, where she provides experiences for teachers to cultivate and sustain a mindfulness practice. She also currently serves as the Director of Practice and Education for the Madison Shambhala Center.
