Join us for the Shambhala Day 2024: Year of the Wood Dragon Live Broadcast!

During this year’s live broadcast, Centres, Groups, and members around the world will gather to practice together, share Shambhala culture, and see greetings from Shambhala sangha throughout our worldwide community. It will be a time of celebrating community, our shared love of practice, and Shambhala teachings, practices, and culture.

We encourage Centre and Groups to include the broadcast in their local celebrations and have shortened the broadcast to 30 minutes so it can more easily be a part of your local gatherings.

This year's live broadcast will include:
  • An excerpt from the 1986 Shambhala Day address by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche
  • Greetings from Centres and Groups around the world
  • An inspirational video about the qualities of the Wood Dragon Year
  • A short community practice session to join us in practice around the globe
  • A brief fundraising request to support Shambhala Global Services

Please check with your local Centre or Group leadership about local events and gatherings to view the live broadcast together. To register your Centre or Group please click here

Individuals may also register on this registration page.

About the Wood Dragon Year

In Tibetan astrology, the Year of the Dragon is associated with qualities of wisdom, confidence, cleverness and honesty. In Dragon years, we may see revolutionary ideas, but these years can also be known for reliability and a lack of arrogance. The element of Wood in the upcoming Wood Dragon year makes this year less fierce and domineering than other dragon times, bringing us a year with potential for working well with others and being able to compromise when needed.

We look forward to starting the new year together and hope to see many of you at the live broadcast!

About the Shambhala New Year and the Shambhala Day Live Broadcast

Shambhala Day marks the beginning of the new year, and is the most important holiday for the Shambhala community. Based on the traditional Tibetan New Year celebration of Losar, the date is calculated astrologically according to the Tibetan lunar calendar, and changes to coincide with the annual lunar cycles. The date for Shambhala Day usually falls somewhere in February or March.

Shambhala Day and the entire Shambhala New Year season is a time for us to reflect on the year that has passed, and to take an opportunity for fresh starts. As the new year approaches, we have practices associated with releasing the accumulated confusion of our past patterns, and inviting sanity into the year ahead. To celebrate the new year, we express the richness of our spiritual and cultural heritage through sharing food and drink, refreshing our homes and Centres so they sparkle, and dressing up to celebrate together.

There is also a short Shambhala New Year broadcast organized by Shambhala Global Services, which features Shambhala greetings from around the world, collective practice, and other festivities. Centres, Groups, and members around the world tune in on Shambhala Day to share in this celebration.
