Practice and Study of the Kagyu Mahamudra
Mahamudra Series Year 3 – Mahamudra Vipashyana

“The quintessence of the … countless teaching of the buddhas is that the wisdom essence … is present as the nature of sentient beings. Among all the different kinds of teaching is one that is the most eminent, the shortest path, the ultimate meaning… Mahamudra is the supreme method that directly and easily reveals the natural face of the mind in which the three kayas are spontaneously present.”
Lamp of Mahamudra, Tsele Natsok Rangdrol

This series continues the study of Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche’s 1993 exposition of Mahamudra Vipashyana.

A number of people have inquired about the possibility of having live study sessions, alternating with and in addition to the main talks. That is in the works and an announcement will be forthcoming. If you are interested in participating in these, let the Loppon know.

A program of practice and study can be pursued at local centres. Participation with your Centre or Group is recommended, however, individuals are also welcome to attend. For more information, request to join the group Kagyu Mahamudra Forum on the Shambhala Network.

The themes for this cycle include:

  • Oral Instructions of the Lineage Masters on Key Points
  • Teaching on Utpatti and Sampannakrama
  • Pointing Out Appearances as Mind
  • Pointing out Mind as Empty
  • Pointing Out Emptiness as Spontaneous Presence
  • Pointing Out Spontaneous Presence as Self-Liberated
  • More Oral Instructions from the Siddhas of India and Tibet

As for practice, we will continue with Mahamudra Vipashyana, augmented with traditional practices done as a foundation for Mahamudra.

It is worth noting that, when the Khenpo first taught Mahamudra to our vajra sangha, at Rocky Mountain Dharma Center in 1991, he concurrently taught on the Two Truths of the various philosophical traditions, which lead practitioners through the progressive stages of view and insight, beginning with egolessness of self (the hinayana Sautrantika approach); and continuing with mind-only and the absence of subject-object duality (the Chittamatra); and analytical meditation on form and emptiness (Svatantrika Madhyamika). The Werma and Kagyü sadhana practices we have received from the Vidyadhara and the Sakyong are also key foundations. During this year, we will practice a few simple and direct meditations from each of these approaches. As we have already been practicing many of these meditations, our task is more and more directly to experience their integration with mahamudra.
